When I was a little kid, for a good creative distraction, my mother would take her
No. 2 pencil and make a purposeful yet haphazard scrawl in my Big Chief Tablet, a
chaos of swirling and intersecting lines looking like the snarled backlash on a fishing
reel or an unkempt bird's nest. Then it was my turn. Crayons in hand, I would see something
in there and coax out an image from the jumble, ending up with a full-blown drawing.
And if it wasn't a scribble to get lost in, then it was the clouds-identifying cartoon faces,
or wild animals or towering cumulus castles in the sky. Imagination. Experiencing the world.
Making things. It was like magic.

It's not just in the expression and execution of artmaking, but also the exclamation mark
that process gives to those things surrounding us, sustaining us, those things we are inspired
by, those things we are grateful for, for all the magic of everyday life. Particularly now,
the exterior world filled with so much fear and cynicism, I wanted this exhibit to unfold in
whatever way the creative process took me, playing off the ideas of wonder, appreciation,
curiosity, cause and effect, momentum, growth, transformation.

There is no better time than now to go to the creative side, taking a break from the clamor,
summoning up whatever incantation calls to these energies wanting to be acknowledged and
expressed. Abracadabra, "I create as I speak," my energies speaking to and through me,
saying, Make a statement, make something happen, paint a painting, pen a poem.

It really is the best distraction. . .

  Ta-da!
